Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:39:54 GMT

Colorado Avalanche assistant coach Nolan Pratt delivered a simple message to his prospective penalty killers at a meeting early in training camp. There are a couple of key guys from the PK a season ago who need to be replaced, but Pratt wanted to set the standard high.“He said, ‘We know the expectation for the (power play) is to be top-five. Why don’t we have the same expectation?” Avs defenseman Josh Manson said. “That should be our mentality coming in, that we want to be a top-five PK, because we can do it.’“I think that really hit the nail on the head.”Everyone knows the Avalanche have the firepower to score with anyone, and any power play that features Cale Makar flanked by Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen is going to have a high floor and sky-high expectations. The Avs have finished sixth and seventh in the NHL on the power play in the previous two seasons, while the PK has been middle of the pack (15th two years ago, 17th last season...

By Bill Barrow | Associated PressATLANTA — Jimmy Carter has always been a man of discipline and habit. But the former president broke routine Sunday, putting off his practice of quietly watching church services online to instead celebrate his 99th birthday with his wife, Rosalynn, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Plains. The gathering took place in the same one-story structure where the Carters lived before he was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 1962. As tributes poured in from around the world, it was an opportunity for Carter’s family to honor his personal legacy.“The remarkable piece to me and I think to my family is that while my grandparents have accomplished so much, they have really remained the same sort of South Georgia couple that lives in a 600-person village where they were born,” said grandson Jason Carter, who chairs the board at The Carter Center, which his grandparents founded in 1982 after leaving the White House a...

The incident caused Gruver, a freshman majoring in political communications, to inhale his own vomit into his lungs.By the time fraternity members finally sought medical aid the next morning, Gruver’s pulse was weak and they couldn’t tell if he was breathing. Gruver’s blood alcohol level was .495, more than six times Louisiana’s legal driving limit, when he died from what an autopsy concluded was “acute alcohol intoxication with aspiration.” He was 18.As college students begin a new semester this fall, many will participate in rituals to bring in new members of a Greek fraternity or sorority, a sports team or other cl...
