Amid spending bill impasse, government shutdown looms

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 19:37:28 GMT

WASHINGTON (Nexstar) -- The U.S. government will shut down at the end of the month unless Congress can strike a deal in the next 12 days. There's now a group of Republicans proposing a short term funding extension to avoid a shutdown - but the proposal may be dead on arrival. Not just because Democrats will oppose it, but also because Republicans can't agree with each other."What most of America doesn't know, the majority of the government will be operating, will be working," says Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina), who expects a government shutdown.Despite this, Mace played down the consequences of Congress failing to fund the government in time stating, "I've talked to some federal employees that don't really mind it, because they're going to get a vacation."But if funding lapses, critical government services to the public could be impacted. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-New York), a member of House Republican leadership, says Republicans are working to avoid a shu...

Township officials question River Grove school activities at Warner Nature Center

Last spring, the Manitou Fund stepped in to save River Grove elementary school after it lost its lease at Wilder Forest in northern Washington County. The White Bear Lake-based fund purchased the Zephyr Theatre building in downtown Stillwater for $2.5 million in June and submitted a plan to overhaul the property to make it suitable for an interim home for the school.Construction on the building, now known as the Manitou Fund Education and Center, is underway. Because River Grove is a public charter school, the plans had to be approved by the state, and the permit for buildout – with a listed valuation of $6.5 million – was issued on Sept. 1, said Tim Gladhill, Stillwater’s community development director. The Manitou Fund Education and Arts Center won’t be ready for several weeks, so school officials and the Manitou Fund, which also owns Warner Nature Center in May Township, came up with a plan to place tents and portable toilets at Warner so the students at the school, which focuses o...

You could call it a sequel to the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, in that it has the same creator (Seung-Whan Song) and it seeks to give the world an entertaining taste of Korean culture. And taste plays a role in “Cookin’,” which is a feast of physical comedy set in a caterer’s kitchen where every surface, pot, pan and utensil becomes a percussion instrument; plates fly; and slicing and dicing are both artistic and chaotic. It’s a show ideal for a multi-generational trip to the theater, one that will inspire plenty of laughter and requir...
